Gently brush your pet frequently, ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for your pet’s particular coat and skin.

<span style="font-family: Symbol; These nutrients are what will make or break a great hair coat.

· Don’t use creams or lotions on your pet’s coat; they will just mat down the hair and cause problems.

Fireplaces and wood burning stoves dry out the air even more. A humidifier is a great way to keep you and your buddies more comfortable. Drinking lots of water works for your pets as well as you. Also, check areas like your pet’s ears and belly frequently. Dry skin often makes the ears itchy and can lead to problems and/or infections.

Rule #1: Make It Fun!

Like most pet owners you probably have a backyard or a place you let your

dog out to run – and this is his/her daily exercise. Unfortunately most dogs

won’t exercise when they are left outside by themselves. As an owner, you

want what is best for your dog – freedom to play – but you don’t want to turn

that play into work.

Most people don’t equate exercise with fun. In reality, exercise is healthy for your dog’s body and mind. Exercise can be used a reward for your dog – giving you the added benefit of time to bond with your faithful friend – a friend that is counting on you to do what is best for them. Here are some tips that, with your veterinarian’s permission, could turn work into reward:

• Make a Friend! Taking your dog to a local dog park can be a treat for both of you. Your dog can run with some friends while you have a chance to share tips and relax with their companions. If the park does not provide water, be sure to bring some along – making friends can build up quite a thirst.

• Go Fetch! Your dog can “fetch” a lot of entertainment out of something that may not seem all that exciting to you. A favorite toy and a safe area to run can lead to a very happy dog. Just a few safety tips:

   • Don’t use a stick for your game of fetch; many dogs are injured this way.

   • Keep your throws low to the ground to avoid injury to your dog’s legs when jumping to catch objects.

• Hidden Rewards! Put aside some of your dog’s normal diet, or choose another low calorie snack, and hide it inside a toy. You can also wrap a favorite toy or small treat inside a towel and let your dog try to unwrap it. These games provide a workout for both body and the mind – and a reward for persistence!

• Routine Play! An everyday walk can become an amusement park for your dog. Set up a small obstacle course, let your dog jump across a fallen tree, or hide a favorite toy along the way for them to find. You can also add a little resistance (and burned calories) by taking your walk in snow, along a sandy area, or in shallow water.

• Exercise Can Go “Swimmingly”! If your dog likes the water, swimming can be a great exercise. Water provides a soothing space for your dog to make full use of his/her joints. A short swim can provide the same amount of exercise as a hard run, without unnecessary stress to the body and joints.

• Indoor Fun! In cold or inclement weather, fun can also be found indoors. Sign your dog up for an agility or obedience class. You can usually find information on classes in your area from your veterinarian or at a local pet store or grooming shop. We naturally apply hand and body creams and use up tubes of chapped lip medication. It should be no surprise then, that these conditions also affect your pet. Dry skin leads to flaking and itching, more dander, and a poorer hair coat. There are some things that you can do to make your pet more comfortable during these chilly months.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; A humidifier is a great way to keep you and your buddies more comfortable. Drinking lots of water works for your pets as well as you. Also, check areas like your pet’s ears and belly frequently. Dry skin often makes the ears itchy and can lead to problems and/or infections.

Provided by:

Somerset Veterinary Group

908.725.1800

Traveling with your Pet

In such a case it’s probably wiser to leave your pet with a friend, relative or hire a "pet sitter". If that is not possible, you might consider boarding him or her at a clean, well-run cattery.

Plan ahead
If you do decide to take your pet along, you must take as much care with the preparation of your pet’s trip as your own. If you plan to travel by plane, bus, train or boat, find out if your pet will be welcome and, what kind of reservations and transport arrangements must be made. If you’ll be staying at hotels, motels or campgrounds, you must check if animals are allowed or if kennel facilities are available. If you’re staying with friends or family, make sure your pet is also invited.

Traveling by plane

Contact the airline you wish to fly well in advance – each has its own regulations and reservations for your pet will be necessary.

Be sure to ask about the airline’s rules for pet crates or carriers.

Try to book a direct flight or one with a minimum of stops.

The airline may allow your pet in the passenger cabin if your crate or carrier can fit under the seat in front of you. If your pet must travel in the cargo hold, be at the airport early, place him in his travel crate yourself and pick him up promptly when you land.

Establish that your pet will be in a pressurized area of the plane – cargo holds can get very hot or very cold without environmental controls.

Traveling by car

If your pet is not used to being in a car, take him or her for a few short rides before your trip. Your cat will probably be safer and more comfortable in a carrier.

Give the main meal at the end of the day. Dry food is more convenient but if your pet needs canned food, dispose of any unused portions if they cannot be refrigerated.

It is not recommended to leave your cat in a parked car for a prolonged period of time. If you must leave your pet in a parked car, put the cat in the carrier, lock all doors and open windows enough to provide good ventilation. Remember, on hot days, the temperature in a parked car can rise to dangerous levels in just minutes and your pet could die of heat stroke.

Traveling by bus, train or boat

Not all bus lines allow you to travel with your pet, so phone ahead for information.

Amtrak does not permit pets to travel in passenger cars, but they may travel in cages as checked luggage.

Some cruise ships do welcome pets. Check with the cruise line or ask your travel agent.

Wherever you go

Ensure your pet ALWAYS wears a collar with complete identification and a license tag. Microchipping with HomeAgain® is the way to ensure you will retrieve your animal should it be lost.

Pack his or her favorite food, toys and dishes, a cooler of water, a litter box and a leash.

Have your pet examined and vaccinated, if necessary, by your veterinarian before a long trip.

If your pet must travel in a crate or carrier, be sure it is strong, large enough for him or her to stand up and turn around, has a place for food and water, and a litter box, is well ventilated, has a leak-proof bottom and closes securely.

Acclimate your pet to the travel crate – leave it out with the door open and perhaps offer treats in or near the cage for days/weeks prior to travel.

Larger dogs can be restrained with seat belt compatible harnesses. These are available at pet supply stores.

All pets need to be properly restrained in a moving car, aside from possibly interfering with the driver; they can become a projectile in the case of sudden stops, injuring themselves or you.

Consult your veterinarian about medical options if your pet experiences motion sickness.

Contact the consulate or embassy of your destination or ask your travel agent for advice if you are planning a trip abroad with your pet, as health and vaccination regulations vary greatly.

<span style="font-family: Arial; Of course you want to include your furry companions in the festivities, pet parents, but as you celebrate this holiday season, try to keep your pet's eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. And be sure to steer them clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations:
O Christmas Tree Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will also prevent the tree water—which may contain fertilizers that can cause stomach upset—from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.
Tinsel-less Town
Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching "toy" that's easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. It's best to brighten your boughs with something other than tinsel.
No Feasting for the Furries
By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to which an enterprising fur kid will go to chomp on something yummy? Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.
Toy Joy
Looking to stuff your pet's stockings? Choose gifts that are safe.

Dogs have been known to tear their toys apart and swallowing the pieces, which can then become lodged in the esophagus, stomach or intestines. Stick with chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safely digestible.

Long, stringy things are a feline's dream, but the most risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can get stuck in the intestines, often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty with a new ball that's too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the interactive cat dancer—and tons of play sessions together.

Forget the Mistletoe & Holly
Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies, can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.
Leave the Leftovers
Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won't lead to costly medical bills.
That Holiday Glow
Don't leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface. And if you leave the room, put the candle out!
Wired Up
Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet's mouth.
House Rules
If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercise while you're busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.
Put the Meds Away
Make sure all of your medications are locked behind secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds zipped up and packed away, too.
Careful with Cocktails
If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
A Room of Their Own
Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups and cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying case or in a separate room away from the hubbub.
New Year's Noise
As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat's intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears.

Dog Waits for Santa

Happy Work Anniversary to Lorraine!

Happy Work Anniversary to Lorraine! If purchasing special goodies from bakeries isn’t your thing, make your own doggie treats! Foods such as onions, macadamia nuts, avocado, grapes, raisins, chocolate, and parts of the turkey, just to name a few, should never be fed to your animal companions. These moisturizing agents include:

Humectants to distribute emollients uniformly throughout the coat

Occlusive Factors to block the skin surface and prevent loss of moisture

Fatty Acids to help maintain the skin’s normal barrier function and assist in controlling flaking and scaling

When do most changes in skin conditions present themselves?

Varying temperatures, humidity levels and allergens across the country allow for troubled skin conditions year round. Some symptoms are commonly seen in the summer and winter seasons.

Winter – dry skin caused by low humidity and heating devices used to warm the home

Summer Moisture loss is frequently due to normal seasonal and environmental changes.

Antiseborrheic – seborrhea is a skin disorder characterized by dry, flaky or greasy, scaly skin. Antiseborrheic shampoos help normalize skin function and the rate of cell turnover.

Antimicrobial – for topical management of bacterial and yeast infections. They are often used in conjunction with systemic antibiotics or antifungal agents.

Antipruritic – used for relief of itching and irritation related to allergies, flea bites, seborrhea and bacterial infections. These shampoos help to relieve itching and soothe the skin.

What is the proper way to shampoo my pet?

While your veterinarian may give special instructions for your pet’s specific skin condition, here are some general guidelines that should be followed.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare found that in shelters, black cats are half as likely to get adopted as are tabby cats and two-thirds less likely to be adopted than white cats.

Many rescue organizations and shelters even have to prohibit the adoption of black cats during October due to the nasty treatment many unfortunately receive.

Black cats and wonderful and should be celebrated.
So, here are top ten reasons why everyone should adopt a black cat:

10. You’ll save money on their Halloween costumes.

9. You can always find them in the snow.

8. Holding a black cat is very slimming.

7. Black cats will match any decor.

6. A link brush isn’t required for a black-tie affair.

5. When you love a black cat, luck is on your side.

4. Black cats are like onyx, a beautiful gem!

3. They love to play just as much as any cat.

2.They are least likely to be adopted.

1. Run your hands over your pet and feel for any unusual lumps or bumps. If you feel something new or unusual, let's take a look at it. Dogs and cats can get benign lumps such as lipomas and sebaceous cysts, but they can also get much more serious tumors, like mast cell tumors, melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and many others. Many of these can be diagnosed with a simple in-office procedure involving a needle aspirate and then a microscopic exam of the cells obtained. A fine needle aspirate is generally less painful than a vaccination, so don't hesitate to get that lump checked out. The importance of annual check-ups regardless of the age of your pet is critical in the prevention of cancer.

Here are the top 10 early warning signs of pet cancer listed out by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

1. Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
2. Sores that do not heal
3. Weight loss
4. There are so many things to be thankful for: family, friends, food, and of course our pets! With all the commotion of Thanksgiving sure to be upon us in the next few weeks it is important remember our furry friends and how we can provide a safe, fun and memorable holiday for everyone. Below is a list of “Turkey Tips” to make sure your Thanksgiving goes as pleasant as possible.

Stuff the Turkey, NOT your Pet: Most of us are guilty (at one time or another) of feeding our pets at the table. This is a bad idea on a few levels. Not only does it send the wrong message to your pet, it could be harmful to their digestive system. Extra precautions must be taken on turkey day. Rich fatty foods such as turkey, gravy, etc. can cause pancreatitis. This is caused by an inflammation of the digestive gland and can be very serious. If your pet is used to getting a few table scraps that is OK, as long as it is in moderation. Also remember with it being a holiday, many animals clinics will be closed. This is an easy way to avoid disaster this holiday.
Discarding the Turkey Strings that Tied the Legs: Believe it or not, this is a major cause for pet emergencies on Thanksgiving. This includes aluminum foil, turkey pop ups, skewers, string, oven bags, whole lead seasonings plastic wrap, and wax paper. Most of these cooking materials are probably drizzling with turkey juice and a major target for your pet. One trick is to put them in a sheet of unused foil as you prepare your dishes then wrap them up and place in the garbage that has a tight fitting lid. The foil will minimize the smell.
Make No Bones About It: Bird Bones (geese, turkey, duck and other birds) can present a huge health risk for your pet. They are hollow and break/splinter very easily. Also, because they are so easily breakable, dogs usually won’t chew them thoroughly. The results are sharp pieces that can choke the dog or block or tear the intestines.
Secure the Garbage Can: If you haven’t noticed already, pets can be scavengers and will wolf down anything that resembles edible eye candy, especially if it smells good. Dogs are especially infamous for “dumpster diving” and very sneaky about their approach. Keep one eye on your pet after the food has been cleaned up and thrown away.
Minimize Stress With the Same Routine: Even though you are frantically planning for the holidays it is important not to change your pet’s food or exercise schedule. These daily activities become a routine for your pet and neglecting this might cause him/her to become insecure. Add this to the crowds and commotion of Thanksgiving, and you could be unintentionally increasing your pets stress level.
If you will be traveling with your pet, preparation is the key. Getting your pet ready for travel is essential to a comfortable trip. Whether by car or air, your pet will need to be restrained in a carrier, booster seat, harness or crate. Get all your supplies together including your pet’s food and toys. Familiar things will make it easier for your pet when they are removed from their familiar surrounds.
Be truly thankful this Turkey Day by keeping your pets safe and healthy. Do you have an older cat or dog sharing your home? If so, you know the joys of pets who might have less spunk but more soul. Here are five reasons to love a senior pet.

1. Distinguished look
You know how as we age, we are said to look distinguished? The same is true for our pets. I think senior cats project an air of peaceful dignity. And who can resist the precious gray muzzle of an older dog?
2. Laid-back lifestyle
For kittens and puppies, most any time is play time. Older pets, however, don’t need to release all that youthful energy. They are quieter and often content to just watch what’s going on in the living room or outside the window. Cuddling next to you takes precedence over most anything else.
3. Fewer demands
Older pets still need love and attention, but they don’t require babysitting like a frisky puppy or curious kitten. Some older pets have special medical needs, but after all they’ve given us through the years, it’s an honor to take care of them in return.
4. Wisdom of the ages
When I look into the eyes of a senior dog, I see a world of experience and wisdom. Older pets know what to expect, and are generally reliable and even. They require little training since they already know the rules.
5. They might be just like you!
As we get older, our needs and routines change. We might prefer quiet evenings at home rather than going out on the weekends. We still like to exercise, walk, or even run—but sometimes we go at a different pace. We might even nap in our chair occasionally. If you have a senior dog, you might find that he’s just like you!

In 1936, a loaf of bread cost 8 cents, a brand new Studebaker sold for a mere $665, and Route 22 was a two lane country road. Somerset Veterinary Infirmary began its long history of caring for animals in the area when it first opened its doors, founded by Dr. V. N. Gordon Darby. Back then, Dr. Darby was as likely to take care of a sick cow as a sick cat. Bridgewater was a farming community in those days, with a population of just under 4,000.

Ten years later, the practice was thriving, and the community was growing rapidly. The hospital and the companion animal portion of the practice were purchased by Dr. Arthur F. North in 1946, while the large animal side was sold to Dr. Carl Lohmeyer. Two years after that, the hospital underwent its first major renovation, which nearly doubled the size of the building.

Dr. North's son, John, spent much of his childhood at the hospital, cleaning cages and helping the doctors from a very young age. It was his home away from home and where he developed his great love for animals and medicine. Realizing that it was his life's dream to be a veterinarian, he attended Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1968.

John returned home and began working along side his father at Somerset Veterinary Infirmary in 1970. The hospital officially changed its name from Infirmary to Group in 1971. He has dedicated his life to practicing quality medicine and surgery, and caring for not only each beloved pet but also their owners. He assumed co-ownership with Dr. Raymond Kenny in 1982 when his father passed away and became the sole owner in 2001.

Dr. North's daughter, Robin Stankowski joined her father in 2006 as the Practice Manager. She is the third generation of North’s who have proudly served the local community at Somerset Veterinary Group and the many generations of clients over the years. "Joining the practice as the manager was like coming home," says Robin, "since I too spent many days here as a kid - helping out, doing odd jobs. Our staff is a family, we truly enjoy working together. I think that has such a positive effect on our patient and client care. I'm honored to work with such a talented team and I'm proud to continue to serve the community that my grandfather created."

Today, the practice has more than twenty employees, including six doctors. The main hospital is located in Bridgewater, in the same location where it began, and where it has flourished and become a much loved part of the community. An outpatient facility is located in the quaint town of Pluckemin, just five miles away. Many changes have occurred to the facility over the years, including the incorporation of computers in the late 1980’s, another huge building renovation and expansion in 1995 and most recently, the switch to cutting edge digital radiography in July of 2010.

As Somerset Veterinary Group celebrates its 75th anniversary, Dr. John North celebrates his 40th anniversary at the practice. He reflects on some of the changes that have occurred over the past four decades since he began practicing, both with the hospital and in veterinary medicine. "Things have changed drastically since I began," North reports. "Medicine has become much more sophisticated. Long ago, we had very limited choices for diagnostics and treatment options. And honestly, people didn't regard their pets as family they way they do now. There was less attachment in those days. Dogs and cats lived outside most of the time, and there was less demand for preventive medicine."

"Back then, diseases like FIV and Lyme disease were virtually unheard of." North recalls. "Distemper and parvovirus were rampant and often fatal. Laboratory testing was rudimentary early in my career, whereas now, we have twice daily pick up from a high tech laboratory and results are faxed back to us quickly, sometimes in just 12-24 hours. Vaccinations have basically eradicated diseases that were fatal just two decades ago. New research surfaces almost daily that creates new opportunities to diagnose and cure pets that owners now consider part of the family. Hip replacements, kidney transplants, MRIs and CT scans are all pretty commonplace now. These things were unheard of in years past."

Dr. Susan Laevey has worked at Somerset Veterinary Group for 17 years, starting at the practice shortly after graduating from University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. Laevey spent many years prior to studying veterinary medicine as a human cytologist, but made the change to medicine because she craved patient involvement. She fondly remembers one of her favorite cases. China Blossom was a 2 year old cat who literally came into SVG dead and left alive! "She was suffering from a severe asthma attack," Laevey recalls, "and she had no pulse and no respiration when she was rushed in. We dropped everything and treated her aggressively and immediately, and she responded and made a full recovery. Those are the cases that really make this career worthwhile."
Lorraine Kellogg, the bookkeeper, started at Somerset Veterinary Group 23 years ago, because she was looking for an employer who would understand her schedule and her need to take care of her young children. She stayed all these years however, because of the people. "It's the people that make Somerset Veterinary Group great. Everyone here is so caring, so understanding and so loving toward the animals. It's a great place to work."
Some of the more interesting species that have been treated at Somerset Veterinary Group over the years include chimpanzees, pythons and even an elephant from a traveling circus in the area. Famous clients of the hospital have included such names as Malcolm Forbes and his son Steve, Doris Duke, Robert Wood Johnson and the Merck family. Also among the clientele have been several senators and governors including former Senator Raymond Bateman, Senator Christopher "Kip" Bateman, and former Governors Thomas Kean and Christie Whitman. Even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor graced the hospital with the presence of their pets in years past.

The staff of Somerset Veterinary Group devotes some of its time to worthy animal causes, including The Seeing Eye, Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, the Somerset County Sheriff's Department Canine Unit, and Puppies Behind Bars. "There's something really special about doing work for service animals." Kristin Flanagan says. Kristin has been a veterinary technician for over seven years, and the newest employee of the hospital. She started in July of 2010 and really loves working at Somerset Veterinary Group. "Knowing that we're working with animals that help people in such critical ways is always heartwarming and very satisfying, as is helping rescued animals find new and loving homes."

As Somerset Veterinary Group celebrates its 75th anniversary, it has been fun to take a trip down memory lane and marvel over the changes that have taken place over the decades. But it is even more important to look forward and focus on the future, and to embrace the rapidly changing world of veterinary medicine. Somerset Veterinary Group stands ready to bring to the community the cutting edge, high quality medicine for which they are known, and the caring, compassionate, old-fashioned service that has earned them their reputation as one of the best in the area.

In celebration of our 75th anniversary, Somerset Veterinary Group will be hosting an Open House at their Bridgewater office on May 14th from 1-4pm (rain or shine). There will be a Tricky Tray fundraiser, prizes, give-a-ways and a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. You can also bring your pet to get a free dental exam or get your pet microchipped for a reduced price. And Dave & Wendy from the WPST radio morning show will be broadcasting live. They will be running a pet photo contest on their website for a chance to win an iPad! The Somerset County Sheriff’s K-9 unit will be doing live demonstrations. So, don’t forget to bring your pet and your family.

WORLD ANIMALS DAY!

Today is World Animals Day.
